Do You Guys Eat Sushi?
«

I know oysters are a no no raw, and I rarely would order my own Sushi platter but I do like the tuna.
Hubby wants Sushi for dinner, and he has never given it up (I refuse to let him ever order raw oysters again). I had never eaten much Sushi because diabetics are not supposed to eat weird things either, so I can do fine with Cucumber rolls and soft shell crab rolls but what about sampling his Tuna Sushi or Sashimi?

Natasha: I don't know if you saw the link I provided on oysters..... but it was in the hemochromatosis link I posted about a week ago in Questions and Answers.
http://www.americanhs.org/
What I've
read
is that other forms of sea food may pose a threat. If you google the actual bacteria you'll probably get a better answer. I
think
the answer is that tuna has a much much lower risk. I think there is some risk (perhaps from different sources) in eating any uncooked meat.

When a friend was studying for her degree in nutrition, she did a bunch of research for/on me and hep c.
I have been a devoted sushi eater for 30 years. As much as I hate to admit it, raw fish is not great for heppers. The high vitamin A content can overwork the liver..

So, nothing gained nothing lost. I'm better off eating my cucumber rolls. Hubby at least stopped the oysters.
Willy, thanks for all the research info.
As things turned out, we had Mexican food anyway!

THe research will undoubtably be beneficial to plenty of people here. Thanks for doing all of the research, Willy.
I personally wouldn't eat ANY raw seafood.
THere is a vegetarian form I would eat. That is are far as I would go.
Also with hep c, we are at a greater risk from ALL foodborne illnesses and other infections. People on treatment have an increased risk. E Coli is another dangerous illness that we need to be careful about, common in undercooked meat, alfalfa sprouts, unpasteurized apple cider, etc.

The reason I don't eat sushi has nothing to with hcv. Have you guys not ever cleaned a fish and found worms in the meat? Yuck!! Never in a million years would I eat raw fish!

Hello,
My MD has told me to stop eating the raw stuff due to the bacteria.
I just stick to the cooked stuff now. Soft shell crab if cooked completely is ok. Any shell fish need to be well cooked.
California rools are fine, Salmon skin hand rolls, Unagi, basic's stay away from raw. Esp oysters.
I still eat the above, but husband eats sashimi.
Hope this helps, Dee

Actually, between the soft shell crabs rolls, cooked shrimp rolls and cucumber rolls, I am in heaven anyway.
However, this nice place we go to, well there is a bit of a communication problem there so you have to really make sure to mark off the right thing on the Sushi sheet.

The Fat Duck restaurant is one of the world's finest eateries and has the statistics to prove it -- three Michelin stars, a number two rating by S. Pellegrino's World's 50 Best Restaurants, among them -- but it's the number 529 that has stuck with the restaurant since February.
That's the number of customers who fell ill with vomiting and diarrhea at the Bray, England restaurant, and forced its two-week closure. Now, Britain's Health Protection Agency has published a 47-page report pinning the blame on norovirus caused by oysters contaminated with human sewage, the Daily Telegraph reports.
The closure, at the time, cost the restaurant about $500,000.
When the restaurant reopened in March, the illness outbreak was originally linked to a number of workers with the norovirus -- better known as a stomach bug or gastroenteritis.
However, the new report cites shellfish as a main culprit. Testing showed raw oysters from a supplier in Essex had been contaminated by raw sewage and consequently became infected with the norovirus.
"We are glad that the report has finally been published and draws a conclusion to the closure of the Fat Duck and more importantly that the norovirus has been identified as the cause and not due to any lapse in our strict food preparation processes," a restaurant spokesman told the Daily Telegraph.
The Fat Duck's chef, Heston Blumenthal, is world-renowned for molecular gastronomy with dishes like "nitro-scrambled egg and bacon ice cream."

Hi there -
I adore raw oysters and littleneck clams on the half shell, sushi not so much. But I can't have them any more then I can drink, use recreational drugs, get a tattoo - which I have to say I wanted Vampirella killing a dragon whose scales were red, yellow and green, but oh well - at this point meat or animal sources of protein. Giving up the meat, even chicken and fish, though I never ate alot of it or often because they are more difficult for my seriously impaired liver to handle. Fact is a diet including animal products had me confused to the point I took myself off the road till it was straightened out - now a vegetarian diet has improved everything by leaps and bounds. It is also safer to eat baked, pan fried or broiled seafood over steamed, particularly in a restaurant because they might not be well enough cooked to kill bacteria, viruses , etc. - another fave. At home you can manage this a whole lot better, thereby making it safer to eat till your hearts content. One last item, which I have not actually found anywhere as a statement in regards to seafood is the salt - which causes all sorts of issues, most obvious to those who have fought water retention.
By way of anecdote, my son's friend who is Chinese and worked in hid father's restaurant for years, not to mention the foods eaten at home including sushi, came down with Hep A, and though he has recovered, he has to be careful for the rest of his life with seafood, drinking, and the rest of the whole shebang.
One of the biggest problems of eating raw meats of any kind including sushi is the possibility of contracted Hep A or B, even with the inoculations, new strains can break through. Hep A in particular, when coupled with C can kill you. That simple, even if your liver has not been impacted by the virus.
So I guess the question is - how worth it is eating some old favorites to you - I don't think worth it enough for me and I do miss the bounty of the ocean very much. It is something I could cry over if I gave it that much attention. Really.
I'm sorry for feeling the need to tell you this, but there you have it,
Susie

You guys might want to be careful about eating too much tuna, cooked or raw.... it has a considerable amount of methyl mercury in it, which is just bad for everyone. People who eat a ton of sushi can easily get mercury poisoning, so enjoy tuna only in moderation.
