This article aims to provide the Cancer patient and family with basic information on the side effects of Chemotherapy and some advice on the management of the patient. Twelve issues will be discussed briefly.
Diet
Both Cancer and Chemotherapy take their toll on the body. Diet, therefore, plays a vital role in combating the disease and regenerating the cells of the body affected by Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy may affect your taste for a while and each patient will have to experiment with food. Foods previously preferred may become temporarily unpalatable. The following foods are important in the diet:
Dairy products such as milk, butter and cheese – Proteins which repair cells and build new ones
White meat in the form of chicken, fish and red meat, which are vital for cell regeneration and replacement
Fibre-rich foods such as porridge, cereals and whole-wheat bread
Vitamins in the form of fresh fruit and vegetables, especially dark green and dark yellow vegetables. These are known as the "glow" foods which maintain health and fight infections.
It is advisable to reduce your fat intake for 2-3 days prior and following Chemotherapy
