When people supplement certain herbs to "cleanse" their liver, they will always affect manganese and iron status.  For instance, by taking Devil's Claw on an ongoing basis, they will eventually raise iron and manganese levels.  On the other hand, taking Milk Thistle will in time decrease iron and manganese stores, which can be an advantage with hemochromatosis (excess iron storage disease), where regular consumption of milk thistle, RNA / DNA, magnesium and Vitamin B2 - whichever ones are individually indicated - will keep iron levels closer to normal, and frequently eliminate the need for phlebotomies

Great info Glen,   Smiley
I had NO idea that Milk Thistle could help control iron levels.
Good to know there's another avnenue to try other than phlebotomies.

Thanks Glen,

I didn't know about milk thistle eventually lowering iron levels either.  And I didn't know Devil's claw raised it!  Just found out that quercetin helps lower iron levels, as well as being anti-inflammatory.

I got my first bottle of Milk Thistle today.  The dosage is 1 to 3 tablets.  Each tablet is 200mg.  How many should I be taking?

Missy,
Kind of depends, mine are 240 mgs and I take 1 capsule 3 times a day. I get mine thru liversupport.com
I have found that its cheaper for me thru there and I get it automatically shipped every 3 months at a cost of $83.00 includes shipping. They tell you how much you need  to take and theres a few other products but not to many. But you can get some good info on things you can do to take care of your liver over there.
Just go over and check it out and you will get an understanding of how much Milk Thistle you should be taking and the ingredients you need.

Mine are 200mg and I take 3 a day.

I avoid iron and have done for years. I seem to hold onto iron so I guess I never have to worry about any low iron issues LOL.

Just found this info that Mr. Moore posted here last year.

__________________________________________________________

 Dosage Recommendations

The suggested dose of milk thistle is generally 12 to 15 grams of dried herb (200 to 400 mg silymarin) per day or silymarin-phosphatidylcholine complex 100 to 200 mg two times per day. For liver protection, 120 mg silymarin (about 2 capsules) two times per day. For liver damage from alcohol, drugs, or chemicals, the recommended dosage of silymarin-phosphatidylcholine should be increased from two times per day to three times per day.

Side Effects

Very few side effects if any have been associated with milk thistle. Milk thistle is considered safe when you follow the recommended dosage.Dosage Recommendations

LMAO Joyce.

Hi all I started with 2 capsules a day (400mg) .  I'm not used to this herbal stuff so I gotta start somewhere.

I sooooo appreciate all the expert advice from the fossil brigade.  I do so respect my elders.   Grin
